Laser fistula
Laser fistula treatment, also known as FiLaC™ (Fistula-tract Laser Closure), is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat anal fistulas. An anal fistula is an abnormal connection between the inner lining of the anus or rectum and the skin around the anus. This condition can cause pain, swelling, and recurrent infections, often requiring surgical intervention.
Key Features of Laser Fistula Treatment:
- Minimally Invasive: The procedure is less invasive than traditional surgery, involving a small incision and minimal tissue disruption.
- Precision: The laser allows for targeted treatment of the fistula tract, reducing damage to surrounding tissues.
- Preservation of Sphincter: The laser procedure preserves the anal sphincter muscles, reducing the risk of incontinence.
- Quick Recovery: Patients typically recover faster and experience less postoperative pain.
- Outpatient Procedure: The treatment is often performed on an outpatient basis, so no hospital stay is required.
- Reduced Recurrence: The laser effectively closes the fistula tract, minimizing the chances of recurrence.
Indications:
Laser fistula treatment is suitable for:
- Patients with simple or complex anal fistulas.
- Patients who want to avoid the potential complications of traditional surgery, such as incontinence.
- Cases where previous fistula surgeries have failed.
Procedure:
During the procedure:
- The fistula tract is first identified using an ultrasound or probe.
- A laser fiber is inserted into the fistula tract.
- The laser energy is then applied along the length of the fistula tract as the fiber is slowly withdrawn. This energy causes the walls of the fistula to collapse and seals the tract from the inside.
- The surrounding healthy tissue remains intact, and the external opening may be closed or left to heal naturally.
Post-Procedure Care:
- Patients may experience mild discomfort, which can be managed with pain relievers.
- Normal activities can usually be resumed within a few days, but strenuous activities should be avoided for a short period.
- A high-fiber diet and proper hydration are recommended to ensure smooth bowel movements.
- Follow-up visits are necessary to monitor healing and ensure the fistula has closed completely.
Laser fistula treatment offers a safe and effective alternative to traditional fistula surgery, providing quicker recovery, less pain, and a lower risk of complications like incontinence.
