Lipoma

A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) tumor made up of fat tissue. Lipomas are the most common type of soft tissue tumor, and they can develop anywhere in the body where fat cells are present. They are typically slow-growing, soft to the touch, and movable under the skin. Lipomas are usually painless and are often discovered incidentally.

Key Features of a Lipoma:

  • Soft and Painless: Lipomas usually feel soft, rubbery, and are not painful. However, if a lipoma presses on nerves or other tissues, it may cause discomfort or pain.
  • Slow-Growing: They grow slowly over time and can range in size from a small pea to several centimeters in diameter.
  • Movable: Lipomas are usually easily movable under the skin when touched.
  • Common Locations: They are most commonly found on the neck, shoulders, back, abdomen, arms, and thighs.

Causes:

The exact cause of lipomas is not well understood, but several factors may contribute:

  • Genetics: Lipomas often run in families, indicating a possible genetic predisposition.
  • Trauma: Some believe that trauma to a specific area may trigger the growth of a lipoma, although this is not proven.
  • Age: Lipomas are more common in adults between the ages of 40 and 60.

Treatment:

Most lipomas do not require treatment unless they cause discomfort, pain, or cosmetic concerns. Treatment options include:

  • Observation: If the lipoma is small and not bothersome, it may be left alone and monitored over time.
  • Surgical Removal: This is the most common treatment for lipomas, especially if they are large, painful, or causing other issues. The procedure is typically straightforward, involving the excision of the lipoma under local anesthesia.
  • Liposuction: In some cases, liposuction may be used to remove the fatty tissue, particularly if the lipoma is large.
  • Steroid Injections: These can sometimes shrink a lipoma, though they are not commonly used.

When to Seek Medical Advice:

  • If the lipoma becomes painful, red, or warm.
  • If it changes in size or shape rapidly.
  • If it is located in a sensitive area or restricts movement.
